About Dr. Jeffrey Karp, LP

Clinical Supervision | Child, Adolescent & Family Therapy | Attachment-Informed Care

After earning his Doctorate in Psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 2012, Dr. Jeffrey Karp completed his pre-doctoral internship at Rappahannock Area Community Services Board in Fredericksburg, VA, and post-doctoral fellowship at an inpatient hospital for children and adolescents in Richmond, Virginia in 2013. He has had the opportunity to work at a wide range of mental health organizations including public and alternative schools, residential facilities, and outpatient mental health clinics focusing on treating children, adolescents, adults, and their families. He has experience treating Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, ADHD, Mood Disorders, and working with neurodiverse individuals. He also enjoys helping families navigate difficult family dynamics, divorce and co-parenting, and establishing effective boundaries within their homes.

When treating patients, he works from an integrative framework incorporating concepts from attachment theory, family systems, psychodynamic theory, and cognitive behavioral therapy. This allows him to understand the emotional underpinnings and relational patterns that underlie a patients' symptoms to help them work towards their goals in the present. He believes in the collaborative nature of the therapeutic relationship. Patients are the experts of their lives and he truly values their insights into themselves and the therapeutic process. He wants his patients to feel empowered in and out of session.

Dr. Karp approaches supervision from a developmental standpoint thinking about where each trainee is in their training and what they need to focus on. He wants to help every trainee feel confident in their abilities to form an in-depth conceptualization of their patient's symptoms; understanding how to integrate their understanding of a person's multiple identity factors and developmental history.

He approaches supervision from a developmental standpoint thinking about where each trainee is in their training and what they need to focus on. He wants to help every trainee feel confident in their abilities to form an in-depth conceptualization of their patient's symptoms; understanding how to integrate their understanding of a person's multiple identity factors and developmental history. The therapeutic relationship is a powerful intervention. He wants to help trainees understand relational patterns that are occurring in the transference relationship and countertransference reactions while also getting practice applying that information in therapy sessions.

During supervision, he wants to create a collaborative and trusting supervisory relationship. He focuses on building a strong supervisory alliance to help trainees feel comfortable talking about perceived mistakes or difficult moments they had. He wants each student to leave supervision feeling more prepared to take on the important task of being a therapist. It's important to highlight each trainee's strengths and gently challenge them to grow as a therapist. His goal for supervision is to help each trainee develop their therapeutic skills and voice to feel confident and prepared to continue their career as a therapist.

At this time, Dr. KARP provides clinical supervision only, for LLPs and TLLPs, and is not accepting individual therapy clients.
